AWS predicts that by 2010, the demand for skilled welders will
outstrip supply by 200,000. One means of addressing the shortage is
through automated systems, such as automatic orbital GTAW units, which
have gained favor in a variety of industries. But that does not
diminish the requirement for an educated and well-trained work force.
Automation requires more training, not less. That is why it is
essential to be trained in basic welding procedures in addition to
operating automated welding equipment.
